In the meantime, five positive cases of swine flu have been reported in the Mira Bhayander region. The situation is worse in Mira Road with three cases reported from Shrusti Sector 3, Shanti Park and Shanti garden Sector 3 respectively. Two cases have been reported from Bhayander’s Indralok and Janata Nagar hutment. According to civic officials, the patients had reported swine flu symptoms between February 7 and 11. While one patient has been admitted to Mira Road’s Bhaktivedanta hospital, the other four patients are in Kasturba, Kokilaben and Jupiter hospital in Thane. Municipal corporators complained that as only Bhaktivedanta hospital has an isolation ward, patients were forced to go to Mumbai and Thane hospitals. The civic health department visited the areas where swine flu patients have tested positive. Both civic and private clinics in the region have received patients with swine flu symptoms.

Numan Ahmed, a 15-year-old student who studied in Pune, had been suffering from high fever for a week. The authorities contacted his father Khalil who brought his son back to their Laxmi Park residence in Mira Road. The boy was later sent to Kasturba Hospital for the test. Three others were first taken to Bhakti Vedanta Hospital at Mira Road, where doctors advised them to undergo tests in Mumbai. The hospital refused to divulge the names of the patients.

Shivmurti Naik, commissioner Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, said that there is a dearth of government hospitals at Mira Road, and hence patients were sent to civic hospitals in Mumbai. “We have requested private hospitals in Mira-Bhayandar to set up quarantine wards for suspected cases, he said.

Naik said that MBMC have also set up nine information booths manned by medical officers to provide information on swine flu, and four ambulances to ferry suspected cases to the government testing centres. A meeting has also been called on Monday to prepare a campaign to create awareness in the area.

In Mumbai, a nine-month-pregnant, 27-year-old woman from Mira Road delivered a stillborn baby at Kasturba Hospital. She had tested positive for swine flu, though this was detected too late. The woman had a normal pregnancy and was due for delivery on August 22.

According to the BMC’s Executive Health Officer Dr. Jairaj Thanekar, the woman first went to the Bhagwati Hospital (a civic hospital designated by the BMC as a screening and swab collection centre) on Thursday (August 13).

On being turned away, she went to the Sanjivani Hospital on Mira Road on Friday, and on Saturday to the Tanwar Hospital, which referred her to the Siddharth Hospital (a BMC hospital with screening, swab collection and isolation facilities). “However, Siddharth did not have the wherewithal to deal with a complicated pregnancy case,” said Ms. Mhaiskar.

On Sunday, the woman was taken back to Bhagwati, which referred her to the Kasturba Hospital.

In defence, Dr. Thanekar said: “The woman was nine months pregnant. Her platelet count was low. She was already being treated for malaria. In such condition, it would have been risky to give her Tamiflu.”

However, he conceded that neither was she screened nor was her throat swab taken when she went to Bhagwati for the first time on Thursday. “She did not fit the case definition of swine flu at that time as she only had a mild fever, and so her swab was not taken,” he said.
